The Smart Dry Eyes concept was developed by Dr. Ludger Hanneken and founded as a company by him in the summer of 2024, based in Berlin.
Dr. Ludger Hanneken has specialized for many years as a practicing ophthalmologist in refractive and cataract surgery. He founded several eye clinics in Germany, Spain, and Andorra, demonstrating his expertise as a high-volume surgeon in modern intraocular and refractive surgical techniques.
In addition to regularly speaking at international medical conferences, he has frequently advised ophthalmic and medical IT companies on various projects.
Disappointed by the current approaches to treating dry eye, he developed a new treatment strategy in recent years. This concept has proven successful in multiple clinical studies and has also been confirmed by other clinics.
As part of this research, Dr. Hanneken developed a treatment protocol for Tixel technology, thereby integrating this cutting-edge device into effective dry eye treatment. This treatment protocol also formed the basis for the recent FDA approval of the Tixel treatment in the USA for relieving dry eye symptoms.
To better meet the needs of dry eye patients, Dr. Hanneken now offers dry eye therapies at the specialized treatment centers of Smart Dry Eyes in Berlin and Zurich.
His vision is to establish a co-management infrastructure that provides low-threshold access for opticians, optometrists, and ophthalmologists to collaborate in treatment—ultimately aiming to improve the quality of life for the growing number of dry eye patients.
