Infrared light therapy

The therapy with infrared light for the treatment of Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) aims to increase the temperature of the Meibomian glands in the eyelids, which liquefies the viscous secretion. This facilitates the release of the secretion during subsequent treatment steps. Moreover, stimulation releases neurotransmitters that stimulate the glands to produce secretions.

Professional cleaning of the eyelids

In cases of Meibomian gland dysfunction or blepharitis, the openings of the gland ducts can be blocked by thick meibum and/or a biofilm on the eyelid margin. Using special instruments, the eyelid margins are cleaned painlessly to remove deposits and bacteria that contribute to the development of dry eyes. By clearing the gland openings, the secretion of meibum is improved.

Expression of the Meibomian glands

After the professional cleaning of the eyelid margins, the secretion of meibum is improved by expressing the Meibomian glands using special forceps. With gentle, precise pressure, blockages in the gland ducts are cleared, allowing the essential lipids to once again enter the tear film.

Tixel

IPL-Behandlung (Intensiv gepulstes Licht)

Depending on the IPL model, a gel—similar to that used in ultrasound examinations—must first be applied to the lower eyelids. Since light energy is used near the eyes during the session, the eyes are protected with special goggles. Five light pulses are applied below the lower lid margin. During the treatment, you will feel warmth, which quickly subsides after the session.

LLL-Lichttherapie (Low-Level Light Therapy)

The newly developed, FDA-approved Tixel technology applies thermal impulses to the eyelids and the Meibomian glands. With ten Tixel impulses, both eyelids are treated in two rows near the lid margin, which takes only about two minutes. The quality and quantity of the secretion are measurably improved. Patients report improvements in their symptoms like never before.
