The symptoms overlap. This article shows typical clues and explains when an examination makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Allergy and dry eye: two causes, similar symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Redness and watering occur in both conditions. The pattern of symptoms and the findings on the eyelids and the ocular surface help to tell them apart.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Itching or burning: the most important clue<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The type of symptoms helps in the search for the cause:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Allergy:<\/strong> The main symptom is <strong>itching<\/strong>, often with a strong urge to rub the eyes.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Dry eye:<\/strong> The main symptoms are <strong>burning and grittiness<\/strong> or the feeling of a foreign body, sore rather than itchy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Severe itching points more towards an allergy, burning and a foreign-body sensation more towards dry eye. Individual symptoms do not confirm the diagnosis; both conditions can also be present at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How itching arises in allergy and burning in dry eye<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In allergic conjunctivitis, immune cells release histamine, among other substances. This can cause itching, redness and swelling. Which processes are involved also depends on the type of allergy.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In dry eye, the tear film or the ocular surface has lost its balance. An unstable tear film and changes in the sensitive nerves of the cornea can cause burning, stinging or a foreign-body sensation. Long periods of screen work can make the symptoms worse, because many people blink less often or incompletely while doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other signs that distinguish allergy from dry eye<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some patterns also help to tell them apart:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Accompanying symptoms:<\/strong> Sneezing or an itchy nose are additional signs of an allergy. However, dry eye can also occur together with other conditions.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Discharge:<\/strong> In allergy the discharge is watery, sometimes with whitish, stringy strands of mucus. In dry eye the eyes <a href=\"https:\/\/smartdryeyes.com\/en\/watery-eyes-feel-dry-paradox\/\">water more as a reflex<\/a>, because the irritated surface raises the alarm.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Eyelids and conjunctiva:<\/strong> Swollen eyelids and a glassy, swollen conjunctiva in both eyes point to an allergy. Thickened, red eyelid margins suggest a Meibomian gland disorder instead.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Timing:<\/strong> Pollen allergies typically occur seasonally; the exact pollen season varies with region and weather. A house dust mite allergy can cause symptoms all year round. Dryness symptoms can increase, for example, with dry air, wind or long periods of screen work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Allergy and dry eye at the same time: a common combination<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allergy and dry eye can occur together. A review frequently found both diagnoses in the groups studied; however, the estimates varied considerably between studies. The allergic inflammation can place an additional burden on an ocular surface that is already sensitive.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there are the allergy medicines themselves. Some <strong>antihistamine tablets<\/strong> can slow tear production, because they also block a messenger substance the lacrimal gland needs to do its work. This effect is more pronounced with older active ingredients; with newer ones, the study results vary. If you notice increasing burning while taking allergy tablets, mention it to your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatment: why allergy and dry eye need different treatment approaches<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different treatments can make sense for allergy and dry eye. For allergic symptoms, anti-allergy eye drops may be considered depending on the findings; for dry eye, treatment depends on the cause of the tear film disorder. These tips help in everyday life:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cool or warm:<\/strong> Cool compresses relieve allergic itching. <a href=\"https:\/\/smartdryeyes.com\/en\/warm-compresses-and-lid-hygiene\/\">Warm compresses<\/a>, on the other hand, help blocked Meibomian glands.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Preservative-free drops:<\/strong> Preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride can irritate the ocular surface further. Preservative-free tear substitutes rinse out pollen and relieve a dry tear film, so they help with both.
