Burning, tired eyes in the afternoon, contact lenses that feel dry, the urge to take them out earlier and earlier: many lens wearers know the feeling. Before you give up wearing lenses, it is worth understanding why this happens. The problem can often be solved.<\/p>\n

Why lenses and dry eye go together<\/h2>\n

If your contact lenses feel perfectly comfortable in the morning but scratchy and tiring by mid-afternoon, dry eye is usually the reason. A lens rests directly on the tear film and depends on it to stay lubricated and let oxygen through. When that film is unstable, the lens has less to float on, so it starts to feel dry and irritating just as the day wears on.<\/p>\n

How the lens disturbs your tears<\/h2>\n

A contact lens effectively splits the tear film into a thin layer in front of the lens and another behind it, and it can speed up how fast the tears evaporate. A healthy, robust film copes with this easily. But a marginal film, often the sign of early gland trouble (MGD), gets tipped over the edge, so an eye that felt fine without lenses becomes uncomfortable with them.<\/p>\n\n\n

Two more factors add to this. Each blink now slides the eyelid over a plastic surface rather than over the cornea, and over the years that repeated friction can irritate the lid margin. The lens surface also collects protein and lipid deposits through the day, and those deposits hold water less well than a clean surface, so the longer the lens has been in, the worse the tear film spreads across it. Less oxygen also reaches the cornea than without a lens, which puts the ocular surface under additional strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the real problem is the meibomian glands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many people who end up giving up lenses do not actually have a lens problem. They have meibomian gland dysfunction that had gone unnoticed until then. Those glands produce the oil that stops the tear film evaporating. When they produce too little oil, or oil of poor quality, the tear film still copes without lenses but stops coping with them. That is why lens intolerance often appears years before a formal dry eye diagnosis: the lens acts as a stress test for the tear film.<\/p>\n\n
