It’s one of the most common complaints we hear, and it’s especially annoying when the watering starts just as you read, work at a screen or drive. Contrary to what you’d expect, that excess tearing is often one of the symptoms of dry eye. Here we explain why it happens and what you can do.

The paradox of an eye that waters while it’s dry

How can an eye that’s dry actually water? When the surface dries out and becomes irritated, the eye reads that discomfort as an alarm and responds by turning on the tap: a sudden flush of tears that spills down your cheek without ever fixing the dryness that set it off.

In other words, watering doesn’t mean you don’t have dry eye. Very often it’s one of its symptoms.

Two very different kinds of tears

It helps to know that not all tears do the same job. Basal tears are the thin, constant layer that lubricates and protects the eye all day without you noticing, and they’re exactly what weakens in dry eye. Reflex tears are the emergency gush that appears suddenly in the wind or when you chop an onion: they arrive in large amounts but vanish in seconds. In dry eye the first is missing and the second takes over, and that imbalance is what leaves the eye feeling constantly flooded.

Why crying doesn’t relieve the dryness

Here’s the key to this paradox. That emergency tear isn’t just water — it carries other substances too — but it behaves differently from your everyday tears (comparative study). Because it arrives suddenly and in large amounts, it tends to run down your cheek instead of staying to lubricate, so the eye can still feel dry. That’s why many people spend the day wiping away tears without any improvement: it’s not that the tear’s «oil» is missing entirely, but that there’s no stability in the amount of tear that stays protecting the surface.

What if it isn’t dry eye?

Constant watering doesn’t always come from dryness. Less often it can be down to an allergy, an eyelid irritation or a problem with tear drainage, so it’s worth having your eyes checked if the watering persists.

A blocked tear duct, which stops tears draining normally.

An allergy, which irritates and inflames the surface.

Blepharitis or a small infection at the eyelid margin.

An in-turned lash that rubs against the eye.

If the watering is constant, mainly affects one eye, or comes with discharge, pain or redness, it is best to have it assessed by a professional rather than waiting for it to clear on its own. Seek same-day care if there is pain, loss of vision, intense light sensitivity, purulent discharge, an injury or a chemical exposure.

The situations that set off the watering

Almost anything that dries the surface of the eye can end up triggering that overflow. The most common culprits are:

Wind and cold, among the worst offenders.

Screens, in front of which we blink far less than we think.

Air conditioning and heating.

Wearing contact lenses for long stretches.

Long hours of reading or driving.

What you can do

While you get to the root of the problem, a few simple habits help break the cycle:

Apply warm compresses when meibomian gland dysfunction or blepharitis is suspected and they have been recommended to you.

Gently clean the eyelid margins every day.

Use preservative-free drops when suitable; there are different kinds —thinner or with a little oil—, but none fully replaces the natural tear.

Take breaks from screens and blink fully.

Protect your eyes from wind and direct air.

These measures can bring relief, though they do not always suffice on their own when the underlying problem is in the meibomian glands.

How we treat it at Smart Dry Eyes

In the clinic we look at your tears and eyelids to understand why they overflow, and we consider other causes such as tear drainage or eyelid position. When unstable tears play a part, stabilising the surface usually reduces the watering, though not equally in everyone. The idea is to treat what’s causing it, not just wipe tears all day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my eyes water in wind and cold?

Wind and cold speed up evaporation of the tear film. The eye responds with reflex tears to protect the irritated surface.

Should I use fewer drops if my eyes water?

Not necessarily. There are artificial tears with lipid components that can help stabilise the tear film. Either way, the important thing is to clarify the cause.

Can watery eyes mean a blocked tear duct?

Yes. If tear drainage is narrowed or blocked, the tears cannot drain and overflow. This can be checked during an examination.

Do your eyes water often?

A quick questionnaire can help you pin down what’s behind your watering and what’s worth checking.

Check what factors may be at play

Note: This article is for general information and does not replace a medical diagnosis or treatment.
